Crane Safety Manual For

Training related CD ROMs
Two new training related CD ROMs, launched at the Annual Conference 2004 in Sydney, are now available for purchase from CICA:
- "How to Read Crane Load Charts"
- "Crane Operator Training Needs Assessment"
CICA decided to develop "How to Read Crane Load Charts", a Load Chart training CD, after hearing from Australian and overseas crane hire companies that most crane operators do not understand or know how to properly read crane load charts. This knowledge is fundamental to a crane's safe operation. The Load Chart CD may also be a useful tool when assessing an applicant for employment.
CICA also developed the "Crane Operator Training Needs Assessment" training CD after several Crane Association members also indicated an urgent need for a tool to help management assess a crane operator’s training needs in-house. This CD can be used to assess the competence of your crane crews to find out whether further and/or refresher training is required.
These training programs have been designed to be used in house, for individual, self-paced operator training and assessment. All necessary instructions are included on the CD, making the programs readily accessible and easy to use.

These are CraneSafe funded initiatives for the purpose of improving the safety of the crane industry.

Crane Safety Manual For Operators/Users 2008
Following an extensive review an updated version of the Crane Safety Manual for Operators and Users is now available.
Issues involved in completing risk analysis for operators are included. There are sections relating to Vehicle Loading Cranes, Electric Overhead Travelling Cranes and Tower Cranes. In each case, detailed instructions are given on how to safely operate the crane and any hazards are clearly highlighted so the Safety Manual can and should be a valuable reference in relation to any of the cranes included therein.
The book also includes instructions on safe driving of cranes on the public highway system to make it a complete package for crane operators.
There is a section on Tilt slab panel erections as well as comprehensive load lifting tackle and rigging equipment. Legal requirements are not forgotten, as there is a specific section which gives guidance on many of the legal obligations for operators and users of cranes.
The Crane Industry Council of Australia (CICA) believes that the Safety Manual should not only be mandatory for operators but should also be used by all owners and users of Mobile Cranes, Vehicle Loading Cranes, Electric Overhead Travelling Cranes and Tower Cranes.
The first Crane Safety Manual was published in 1978 and this was followed by a much extended and updated edition in 2002,
which was revised and reprinted in 2005 and 2008.
Copies of the updated manual are now available and can be sourced through the Crane Industry Council of Australia on Tel: (03) 9561 5033 or Fax (03) 9561 5088. Orders can also be placed through this website either by accessing the online order form or downloading the PDF file. Copies can also be ordered through the five State Crane Associations who carry stocks for the convenience of the local industry.
